Since ancient times clothing is one of our basic needs. It is difficult to name the exact date when people started thinking of proper clothes, but already in Stone Age men were trying to cover their bodies using different sources of nature, such as grass, tree leaves, animal skin, etc. As the civilization advanced, people learnt the art of weaving from natural fibers. Since then, gradual development of cloth making began. While at those times people wore clothes mostly because of modesty or to show their social status, today clothing has become an integral part of everyday life. Modern people don’t look for fashion as much as for comfort and good quality. Clothes also reflect each person’s inner world. If someone is wearing bright and colorful items, he or she wants to be noticed. If someone prefers soft colors, he or she is most likely to be a balanced person.
So, what are the main functions of clothes apart from identifying the wearer’s mood or character? First of all, clothes are meant to provide physical protection. That’s why we choose to wear woolen sweaters in cold weather, light T-shirts and sandals in summer, raincoats in rainy season, etc. Secondly, it’s the aesthetical factor of clothes. Properly chosen clothes can enhance the natural beauty and vice versa. People, who know how to hide their unattractive body features and highlight the advantageous parts, will always look stunning. Thirdly, it’s the social development. We live and act in the society where clothes are an integral part. That’s why social development is defined by proper clothing.
Mental development is also important. It is closely connected with social factor. It would be weird if a person wore a woolen suit in summer. Choosing everyday clothes and matching accessories, a person uses imagination and creativity. This subsequently leads to mental process. By wearing certain style clothes a person wants to emphasize his inner state. This is the identification factor. Speaking of different professions, it’s worth mentioning that doctors, firefighters, lawyers, football players, flight attendants and others have to wear professional uniform to define their social roles. And finally, clothes add variety to life. They cope with monotony and enhance one’s artistic abilities.
