The Aim:
To get pupils to know everything
about the culture of Great Britain.
Problems:
● to extend pupil’s knowledge about the life of people in England;
● to wide the pupils outlook;
● to get more information about famous people of GB.

William Shakespeare
is one of the greatest
and most famous
writers in the world. He
was born in 1564 in
Stratford-on-Avon.
Shakespeare’s works are true masterpieces of the world literature: ”Hamlet”, “Othello”, “King Lear”, “Romeo and Juliet”.

Robert Burns (1759-1796)
Robert Burns is a well-known and popular Scottish poet. He was born in 1759.

Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Charles Dickens was a famous English writer. He was born in 1812, in the family of a clerk. In Dickens’s novels we find a sharp criticism of social injustice.
Among his famous works are: “Pickwick Papers”,
“ Oliver Twist”,“Domby and Son”,“David
Copperfield”.
The literary heritage of Charles Dickens is immense.
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a doctor. His medical knowledge was a great help to him in his detective stories. Conan Doyle was one of the fist, who started the fashion of detective srory.
Conan Doyle created his
famous character, Sherlock
Holmes, in 1885 .
Walter Scott (1771-1832)
W. Scott, a Scottish writer, a born story teller and master of dialogue, one of the greatest historical novelists, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Scott often wrote about the conflicts between different cultures: between Normans and Saxons, Chrisrians and Muslims.
His famous works: ”Ivanhoe”,”The Talisman”, “Richard-the-Lion-Hearted”, “The Monastery”.
Agatha Christie (1890-1976)
Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in Torquay in England. She wrote nearly seventy novels in her career, and more than a hundred short stories.
She was, and is, known to millions of people throughout the world as the Queen of Crime.
Agatha Christie’s most famous characters are Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple
Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)
R. L. Stevenson, Scottish essayist, poet and author of fiction and travel books, known especially for his novels of adventure. His famous book is “Treasure Island”.

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin, but went to live in England. He is known as novelist, the author of beautiful fairy-tales, essays, criticism and plays.
Oscar Wilde is known as the creator of social problematic native drama.
His novel “The picture of Dorian Gray” is very popular.
Daniel Defoe (1660-1731)
English novelist, pampphleteer and journalist, author of Robinson Crusoe.
Daniel Defoe’s famous book
is “Robinson Crusoe”
Herbert George Wells (1866-1946)
H.G.Wells, English novelist was born in Bromley, Kent. Well’s novels are among the classics of science-fiction.
“ The Invisible Man”, “The War of the Worlds”, “The Time Machine”, “The war in the Air”
He also wrote realistic novels and novels of ideas, short stories and novellas.
Rudyard Kipling (1865- 1936)
Rudyard Kipling is one of the outstanding British writers. He was born in 1865 in the family of an Englishman in India.
In October 1902 his “Just so Stories for Little Children” were published.
His fairy-tales were rather unusual for the British literature of that period.
Lewis Carroll (1832-
Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of Charles L. Doddson. He was born in England in 1832. Charles got his early education at a public school.
Lewis Carroll is the man who wrote a famous book for children “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”
Conclusion:
● Pupils have known some new information
about famous people of Great Britain.
● They enlarged their vocabulary.
● Pupils were greatly impressed with this
country.
● It helps pupils to understand the culture of
different countries.
