The Abbey Church of St Alban (since 1877 a cathedral), built over the spot where a Roman citizen called Alban was executed around June 250, thus becoming the first Christian martyr in Britain

This is a reconstruction of the Shrine of Saint Alban (England's "first martyr"). The shrine would have been surrounded by stacks of offerings brought by pilgrims over the centuries. Of more interest is the wooden structure in the background because this is a unique survivor and original. It is the elevated wooden balcony from which the duty monk kept watch to make sure nothing got nicked.

Waltham Abbey - beautiful original Norman nave (early 1100s) with Victorian apse, "rose" and Zodiac ceiling

Parish Registers like these can be viewed because of the generosity of the Mormon Church
